Successes include reduced charge inventory, record monetary recovery, strong closures through mediation and continued outreach efforts during the pandemic
EEOC issued its annual Fiscal Year 2020 Agency Financial Report on November 16, 2020. Key accomplishments in the private sector include:
- Reduced the charge workload by 3.7% to 41,951, the lowest pending inventory in 14 years.
- Increased the percentage of charges resolved with an outcome favorable to the alleged victim by nearly 2%, to 17.4%.
- Secured a record amount of recovery, more than $333.2 million, to employees and applicants in the public sector and state and local government through mediation, conciliation, and other administrative enforcement efforts.
- Obtained $106 million in monetary relief through litigation.
Key accomplishments in the public sector include:
- Decreased the pending inventory of hearing receipts for the third consecutive year, a reduction of 15.7% to 10,905.
- Reduced the number of appeals that were more than 500 days old by 32%.
- Secured $96.2 million in monetary relief for federal employees and job applicants.
EEOC also conducted more than 6,700 successful mediations resulting in $156.6 million in benefits to charging parties. Over the course of the mediation program resolutions occurred within an average processing time of 100 days.
Despite the pandemic, EEOC staff conducted more than 2,690 outreach events in both sectors reaching nearly 300,000 individuals. Related to COVID-19, EEOC staff participated in 365 outreach events, reaching 51,419 people. EEOC also issued What You Should Know about COVID-19 and the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, and Other EEO Laws to provide guidance during the pandemic.
