Today is Equal Pay Day marking how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned in 2020. It is also a day to raise awareness around the pay gap that exists—women still earn 82 cents for every dollar a man earns. And overall, earn $407,760 less than men over a course of a 40-year career.
Additionally, women had to work close to 15 months to earn what men did in just one year. If you look at it on the scale of a working day from 9:00-5:00, women start working for free at 2:40 p.m. The pay gap is even worse for women of color, immigrant women and transgender women emphasizing the ever-present effects of gender, racial and ethnic discrimination.
